Outline Itinerary
Day 1 Kathmandu / Tsetang
Day 2 Tsetang Sightseeing Yongbulakhong Palace / Changdu Monastery. Afternoon, visit Kings' Tombs. O/N Hotel.
Day 3 Tsetang to Lhasa, visit Samye Monastery en route.
Day 4 Lhasa sightseeing Potala Palace / Jokhang Temple / Bakhor street.
Day 5 Lhasa sightseeing Drepung Monastery / Sera Monastery /Norbulinka
Day 6 Free day or optional excursion in the surroundings of Lhasa.
Day 7 Lhasa to Gyantse.
Day 8 Gyantse sightseeing Kumbum and Palchor Chode Monastery and to Shigatse
Day 9 Shigatse sightseeing Tashilhunpo Monastery.
Day 10 Shigaste to Xegar visit Sakya Monastery en route.
Day 11 Xegar to Zhangmu.
Day 12 Drive to Kathmandu.
Day 01: KATHMANDU - Tsetang
In the morning you will be transferred to the airport to depart on your 1hr and 10 min flight to Gonggar airport. Of course this tour can also be booked excluding the flight when you are arriving in Tibet from a different destination. Please let us know at our booking form when this is the case. While you land at Lhasa Airport, a representative of Nature Trail Trekking will be waiting for you at the airport and he will clears/help you to check you in Tibet/Lhasa and he will transfer you to your hotel in Tsetang. Please note that the distance between Gonggar Airport and Tsetang is 120 km and takes about 3-4 hours, a very scenic drive and your first experiences with Tibet. Overnight stay your desired hotel.
When you land in Lhasa, you might feel a small headache and some of you could feel uncomfortable due to the altitude and it might take some time to adapt (depending on the person and their physical conditions). Note that Kathmandu is only 1300m while Lhasa is situated at 3600m above sea level.
This evening you will discuss your program with your tour guide and may be shown around before or after your meals if desired.
Day 2 Tsetang Sightseeing Yongbulakhong Palace / Changdu Monastery. Afternoon, visit Kings' Tombs. O/N Hotel.
Today we will start our sightseeing in Tsetang with the Yumbu Lagang, the first building in Tibet and later the Changdu Monastery. After lunch we will visit the tombs of the Tibetan Kings in the Yarlung Valley, the cradle of Tibetan Civilization. We will stay overnight in Tsetang.
Day 3 Tsetang to Lhasa, visit Samye Monastery en route.
This day we will move on to Lhasa, passing the Yarlung Valley on our way. We will visit Samye Monastery en route which is the first Monastery ever built. In the afternoon we will arrive in Lhasa where we can get some rest.
Day 04: Sightseeing in Lhasa- Potala Palace- Jokhang Temple Barkhar
This day we will visit the Potala Palace in the morning one of the most famous architectural works of Tibet In the afternoon we will arrive at the Jokhang Temple, Tibet's holiest temple which contains a jeweled image of the Buddha. After that we will experience the Barkhor Square, an old market square where you'll see wily Chinese and ancient Tibetans bargaining for goods. We will stay overnight in Lhasa.
Day 05: Sightseeing in Lhasa –Drepung Monastery / Sera/ Norbulinks
In the morning we will have a guided tour to the largest monastery in Tibet, Drepung monastery. and after that we will visit Sera monastery and continue to Norbulinka in the afternoon which means beautiful gardens in Tibetan. We will stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 6: Free day or optional excursion in the surroundings of Lhasa.
Today you can choose to explore at your own or go on one of the following optional excursions. You can choose between the Shurpa Monastery (75 kms from Lhasa), Yangbajing THESE ARE THE NORTHERN GRASSLANDS(the highest altitude hot springs in the world, 120 kms), Ganden Monastery (65 kms), or to the Drakpaya Cave (50 kms). We will have a picnic lunch on the excursions and you will be returned to Lhasa in the afternoon.
Day 7: Lhasa to Gyantse
After your early breakfast, you will check out from you hotel and you will drive an approximate 8 hrs towards Gyantse. After passing the beautiful Lhasa valley and crossing the Brahmaputra River (The holy River), you will pass the Kamba la pass (4794 m) to the south. While driving you will see Tradduk Temple Tso (Turquoise Lake) which will take an hour to drive around. You will go over the Karo la pass (5010 m), that climbs between two lofty mountains Nozing Khang Sa (7223 m) and Ralung (6236 m), and will reach Gyantse. A very scenic drive with lots of photo and other interesting stops You will stay overnight in a hotel in Gyantse.
Day 8 Gyantse sightseeing Kumbum and Palchor Chode Monastery and to Shigatse
In the morning you will have a guided tour to the
Palchor Choede Monastery including the Kumbum and at noon you will drive to
Shigatse , en route, we will visit the Shalu Monastery. Upon arrival in Shigatse, we take the time to relax and stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 9 Shigatse sightseeing Tashilhunpo Monastery.
A very easy and relaxing day where we will have a guided tour to the
Tashilhunpo Monastery , the seat of the Panchen Lama. In the afternoon you will visit the ruins of the old castle and the local traditional market.
Day 10 Shigaste to Xegar visit Sakya Monastery en route.
You will be heading towards the town of Xegar, which is also called the gateway to Mt. Everest. Beyond the small town of Lhatse you cross the two highest passes on our journey, the Gyula and Gyatsola. From here you will descend to the plains, passing lonely monasteries and the camps of nomadic herders, en-route to Xegar. En route we will pay a visit to the Sakya Monastery. The drive is approximately 8 hours to Xegar where we will stay overnight.
Day 11 Xegar to Zhangmu.
On the way to Zhangmu you will cross the Lalung la Pass (5050m) and Nyalamu Pass (3800m) which is decorated with multicolored prayer flags fluttering in the wind. This drive offers fantastic view of high mountains including Mt. Langtang (7245 m), Mt. Xixapangma (8013 m), Mt. Dorje Lakpa (6980 m), Mt. Makalu (8464 m), Mt. Everest (8848 m), Mt.Lotse (8501 m), Mt. Cho oyu (8200 m). Along the zigzag road we will drive down to Nyalam (3.600 m) gradually and leave the landscape of the high plateau behind us and see the Himalayas covered in the sea of clouds and reach Zhangmu. Overnight at hotel
Day 12 Drive to Kathmandu.
After breakfast, you will drive from ZhangMu to the Kodari Border (Nepal China Friendship Bridge) where a representative of Nature Trail Trekking is waiting you to take back to you Kathmandu after a lunch break at Dhulikhel. Along the route we will see the beautiful deep valley of Bhote Koshi River with lots of waterfalls and near Kathmandu you will have fascinating mountain views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Gaurishankar in the distance.
