One of our most popular trips is the Tibet Encounter Tour where you make a journey overland taking the road from Lhasa to Kathmandu (or vice versa) passing the major cities in Tibet. On the way we go through high mountain passes, visit many interesting places and experience the local inhabitants and their culture.

Details Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu / Lhasa

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport to depart on your 1hr and 10 min flight to Lhasa. Of course this tour can also be booked excluding the flight when you are arriving at Lhasa from a different destination. Please let us know at our booking form when this is the case. While you land at Lhasa Airport, a representative of Nature Trail Trekking will be waiting for you at the airport and he will clears/help you to check you in Tibet/Lhasa and he will transfer you to your hotel in Lhasa. Please note that the distance between Lhasa Airport and Lhasa is 93 km and takes about 2 hours, a very scenic drive and your first experiences with Tibet. Overnight stay your desired hotel.

When you land in Lhasa, you might feel a small headache and some of you could feel uncomfortable due to the altitude and it might take some time to adapt (depending on the person and their physical conditions). Note that Kathmandu is only 1300m while Lhasa is situated at 3600m above sea level.

This evening you will discuss your program with your tour guide and may be shown around before or after your meals if desired.

Day 02: SIGHTSEEING IN LHASAPOTALA PALACE / SERA / NORBULINKA
This day we will visit the Potala Palace in the morning one of the most famous architectural works of Tibet and after that we will visit Sera monastery and continue to Norbulingkha in the afternoon which means beautiful gardens in Tibetan. We will stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 03: SIGHTSEEING IN LHASA – DREPUNG / JOKHANG TEMPLE & BARKHOR
In the morning we will have a guided tour to the largest monastery in Tibet, Drepung monastery . In the afternoon we will arrive at the Jokhang Temple , Tibet's holiest temple which contains a jeweled image of the Buddha. After that we will experience the Barkhor Square , an old market square where you'll see wily Chinese and ancient Tibetans bargaining for goods. We will stay overnight in Lhasa.

Day 04: LHASA - GYANTSE (3950m)
After your early breakfast, you will check out from you hotel and you will drive an approximate 8 hrs towards Gyantse. After passing the beautiful Lhasa valley and crossing the Brahmaputra River (The holy River), you will pass the Kamba la pass (4794 m) to the south. While driving you will see Yamdrok Tso (Turquoise Lake) which will take an hour to drive around. You will go over the Karo la pass (5010 m), that climbs between two lofty mountains Nozing Khang Sa (7223 m) and Ralung (6236 m), and will reach Gyantse. A very scenic drive with lots of photo and other interesting stops  You will stay overnight in a hotel in Gyantse .

Day 05: GYANTSE - SHIGATSE (3900 M) - 90kms
In the morning you will have a guided tour to the Palchor Choede Monastery including the Kumbum and at noon you will drive to Shigatse, en route, we will stop at local farm-lands to visit locals and explore how locals live their daily life, working on their farm-lands. Upon arrival in Shigatse , we will have a guided tour at the Tashilhunpo Monastery , the seat of the Panchen Lama and visit the local traditional market and we will stay here for the night.

Day 06:
After breakfast we will leave for a visit to the Sakya Monastery , an excursion of approximately 4 hours and afterwards we will drive for two to three hours (90kms) to overnight in the Tibetan truck stop town Lhatse.

Day 07:
We will drive today for approximately 5 hours for a distance of 95 kilometers. The tour begins with the Tsho La (4500m) and ends with the spectacular view of Mt. Everest from Rombuk Monastery (5,000m). In the night you can relax at the guest house and stroll around the monastery.

Day 08:
Full morning excursion to the Everest Base Camp (5200m)  for approximately 4 hours and return to Rombuk to head to Lao Tingri (2-3 hrs drive -95 kms). Lao Tingri is a small Tibetan town that offers the best view that you will not find anywhere else in the world. This is where we will stay for the night.

Day 09:
Make sure you have some photos left for the panoramic view of the Himalayan range as you cross the Lalung La pass  (5050m) on your way to Nyalam . This is a six hour drive on a zigzag road where you will see multicolored prayer flags fluttering in the wind on the pass.  

Day 10:
From Nyalam, we head to the border town of Zhangmu where you may visit Pelgyeling monastery where Milarepa's cave (Tibet's most famous Yogi) is situated. Two hours drive will bring you to the Nepal/China border where we will change vehicles and we start our journey to Kathmandu, a drive of approximately 5 hours.
