Nepal is a country with various unique local bird species, which makes it the ideal country for a bird watching tour! Explore the Bardia National Park and Chitwan, both especially great for bird watching. Observe, among others, Black Storks, Black Ibis, Woolly-necked Stork, Slaty-Woodpecker, Kingfishers, and Waders and Raptors, various partridges, quails and francolins.

The Bardia National Park is a wildlife reserve on Nepal’s border to India and has an amazing population of wild animals. Among those, Bardia has more than 250 species of birds, including the endangered Bengal florican and sarus crane. It is the largest national park in the Terai, a beautiful, unspoiled wilderness of sal forest and grasslands. Furthermore, Lumbini is not only the birth place of Buddha, but also inhabits many bird species to observe. Continuing to Chitwan National Park, we will explore the first National Park in Nepal that is listed as a world heritage site. Among the chance of spotting various mammal species, the park is home to many different birds that we can observe on our birdwatching tour.

Lastly, we will end our trip in one of Kathmandu Valley’s most beautiful National Parks: Shivapuri.

The birds…

In addition, Nepal’s only endemic bird, the Spiny Babbler, was seen on our last visit. All our recent trips have yielded Wall creepers wintering along the Seti River. Among the Raptors, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Shaheen Falcon, and Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Shikra, Eurasian Griffon, northern sparrow-hawk and the Common Kestrel are likely to be seen. Other possible sightings are: Long-tailed Broadbill, Northern Goshawk, Steppe Eagle, Dark-throated Thrush, Yellow-bellied Fantail, Rufus-gorgeted Flycatcher, Orange-flanked bush Robin, Golden bush Robin, Spotted Fork-tail, Green-backed Tit, Striated Laughing-thrush, Rufus-winged Fulvetta, Dark-breasted Rosefinch, Chestnut-bellied Thrush, Red-billed Blue Magpie, streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Rusty-cheeked scimitar Babbler, Nepal Fulvetta etc.

Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Nepal! A refreshment drink and a Nature Trail representative are waiting for you. After check-in in your hotel, we meet and discuss the trip outline. You will meet your guide and have the chance to ask any remaining questions.

Flight to Nepalgunj, drive to Bardia National Park

After an early breakfast and a short flight to Nepalgunj, we drive to Bardia National Park. Birding on the way- sites: Babai River and Sal-forest. Black Storks, Black Ibis, Woolly-necked Stork, Slaty-Woodpecker, Kingfishers, and Waders and Raptors. We will stay at the Samsara Safari Camp.

Bardia National Park

The first day is a whole day of birding in Bardia National Park. We will visit the park on Jeep with a picnic for lunch, while we enjoy the beautiful nature. The second day we spend floating on a raft on the Karnali River, which enables us to get a different perspective of the National Park.
On the third day we will enjoy beautiful oxbow lakes, for observing waterfowls and other raptors.

Drive to Lumbini

A comfortable birding drive from Bardia National Park to Lumbini, birth place of the Buddha.

Birding in Lumbini

Lumbini is known as the birthplace of Buddha. However, it has much more to offer than that, for example the Sacred Garden, ponds and wetlands that are ideal for birdwatching.

Chitwan National Park

The lowland forests and grasslands in and around Chitwan are famous for their wildlife and birds. The elusive Bengal Tiger is probably the most well-known inhabitant. The one-horned rhinoceros is equally spectacular and there is also a chance of seeing leopards, sloth bears, gaur and gharial. The jeep safari drives us through two major lakes: Lami Taal and Tamor Taal. In case of high water levels in the river, we take the route through twenty-thousand lake as alternative.
The second day starts after an early breakfast. We will spend the whole day in Chitwan National Park. Picnic Lunch. We drive back before sunset to enjoy dinner and the Tharu Culture Show. Possible sighting today includes: Great Hornbill, Bengal Florican, Silver-eared Mesia, Grey-headed fish eagle, Pallas fish eagle, King-fishers, Woodpeckers, Bee-eaters, parakeets etc.

Drive to Pokhara

We leave Chitwan, after breakfast, for Pokhara bird watching enroute. The hotel we stay in is located at the edge of Phewa Lake. Its garden reflects a botanical feeling, with abundant birdlife. The beautiful Annapurna range can be seen permitting the weather. Yet, Asian Barred Owls, Great Barbets, beautiful Niltavas and various sun-birds will be doing their best to distract you! The forest by the lake accommodates Kalij Pheasant, Puff-throated Babbler and Crimson Sunbird.

Drive to Kathmandu 6hrs.

We leave Pokhara early in the morning. Birding en-route: Eurasian Griffon, Red-headed Vulture, Egyptian vulture, and steppe eagle are usually sighted on the way. Hotel check-in in Kathmandu.

Shivapuri National Park Birding

Let’s discover the fauna of the Kathmandu Valley in ons of it’s most beautiful National Parks: Shivapuri.

In the evening we enjoy a farewell dinner with a traditional Nepali cultural show.
