Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking is one of the most famous and stunning sunrise points in Nepal’s Himalayas. The Ghorepani trek offers a wonderful opportunity to witness the beauty of the Annapurna region in a shorter trek, ideal for time bound travellers. This place is rich of veiled treasure of Nepali traditions and customs. Especially the charming Gurung and Magar villages, dense Rhododendron (National Flower of Nepal) and Oak forests are stunning and great in front of the camera, offering a mix of natural beauty and local culture. Moreover, just about every outlook is an enticing glimpse of Mt. Fishtail (6993m), Annapurna South (8091m) and Dhaulagiri (8167m).

One of the highlights of the Gorepani Poon Hill trek is reaching Poon Hill, which is situated at the altitude of 3210 meters/10533 ft. It is a popular point to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas. After experiencing the sunrise at Poon Hill, the trail gradully decends, passing through beautiful landscapes and terraced fields.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is relatively moderate in terms of difficulty and can be within 7-8days. It is suitable for trekkers of various fitness levels, making it popular choice for those with limited time 0r less trekking experience. The trek offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse in the natural beauty of the Annapurna region while also experiencing the local culture and hospitality of the local people.

Itinerary Outline:

Day 01: Arrival to Kathmandu

Day 02:Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara(820m/2690ft)

Day 03: Drive to Nayapul/Birethati , start trek to Ulleri (1960m/4905ft) – 4 to 5 hrs walk

Day 04: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2750m/9022ft) – 5 to 6 hrs walk

Day 05: Sunrise at Poon hill (3193m/10531ft), trek to Tadapani (2590m/7563ft) – 6 to 7 hrs walk

Day 06: Tadapani to Ghandruk (1940m/6365ft) – 3 hrs walk

Day 07:  Ghandruk to Birethati/Nayapul, drive to Pokhara(approx. 30 min drive) (1900m/6295ft)– 5 to 6 hrs walk

Day 08: Drive back to Kathmandu

Drive Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m) 6-8 hours drive

Early morning after breakfast board a bus and drive to Pokhara. It’s a drive of about six to eighht hours through lush green forest, meandering road through the hills and besides graciously flowing rivers. You will cross lively markets and clusters of villages on the road side. Lunch will be taken in one of the road side restaurants on the way to Pokhara. Upon reaching in Pokhara, you will be received and driven to the hotel. Check into the hotel in Pokhara.

Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul/Birethati, trek to Ulleri (1960m)

After breakfast, we take a bus to Birethati, which takes around 2 hours. After reaching Birethati, you will start your trekking. Birethanti – a gorgeous village that has plenty of tea shops and guest houses. Then follow the left direction through the village. It offers a tranquil atmosphere, with traditional stone houses and terraced fields dotting the landscape. Your trek continues heading to Ulleri along the bank of the Burundi stream. You will hike up to the valley of Hile and Tikhedhunga. The trail leads steep up to Ulleri, a large stunning Magar village, where we stay overnight.

Trek Ulleri to Ghorepani (2750m)

After breakfast, we continue walking making sure that we’re always on the inside of the path, thereby permitting the donkeys to pass through. Occasional views of the peaks give way to a narrower valley. Then we proceed through Rhododendron forest and eventually reach to Ghorepani. It is a beautiful place from where we can enjoy the most spectacular views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range.

Sunrise at Poon Hill, trek to Tadapani (2590m)

Early morning, we will climb up for one hour to Poon Hill. It is one of the most popular sunrise spots in Nepal. Poon Hill is situated at an altitude of 3210 meters from where we can see the tremendous views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range. After appreciating the golden mountains and taking a good pause, we trek down to Ghorepani village, have breakfast and proceed to Tadapani.

From Ghorepani the trail climbs south following a path through dense forests. It finally emerges on a grassy knoll which offers perfect mountain views, including sight of Machhapuchhre and a panorama all the way south to the plains of India. The area is quite alike to that of Poon Hill. Keep climbing along the ridge all the way through pine and rhododendron forests to a ridge at 3030 m, and then descent to two bars, a second pass also known as Deurail at 2960m. The trail then descends sharply to a stream before the hiking resume, going through a forest to Tadapani. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Tadapani to Ghandruk (1940m)

After breakfast ,From Tadapani, the trail descends through stunning forests to Ghandruk, which is a beautiful village of Gurung people, one of Nepal’s most popular ethnic groups, known for their distinctive language, culture, customs and lifestyle. It is also home to many soldiers from the famous Gurkha soldiers in both British and Indian armies. From here we can have stunning views of Annapurna South, Annapurna III, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and Fishtail. Visit to the Gurung museum is interesting to learn more about the people and their life.

Ghandruk to Birethati/Nayapul After breakfast, drive to Pokhara (1900m)

We descent down through the Annapurna region. It takes you through lush forests, terraced fields, and offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountains. The trail descends, providing a beautiful and fulfilling experience in a short span of time. In the evening enjoy the night view of Pokhara (lakeside).

Drive Pokhara to Kathmandu

Early morning we depart from Pokhara it takes about 6-8 hours to drive back to Kathmandu crossing over some mountain passes and rivers along the way(Trishuli River). We enjoy a farewell dinner and reflect on a great adventure in Kathmandu in the evening organized by Nature Trail.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a beautiful short trekking route in Annapurna Conservation area in Nepal. It is a beautiful route starting after 2 hours’ drive to Nayapul, and end at same place or Phedi, before you drive and end at Pokhara. Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking considered as most beautiful short trekking route to see the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges being lit up by the golden sunrise.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is easily accessible from Pokhara and one can comfortably complete within 5 days’ time however, if you have more time it can be added up to 7 days or even more days combing Jhinu Danda, Landruk, Tolkha, Dampus areas or can complete less than 5 days as well.  Of course, based on your timeframe, Nature Trail can tailor-make the itinerary, and happy is to organise everything accordingly.

The altitude at Poon Hill is 3210m and it offers a spectacular panoramic view of whole Annapurna range including Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Annapurna South, Mount Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Butterfly Peak (mountain), Himchuli, Gangapurna, Lamjung Himal, and Manaslu Ranges. Poon Hill is also one of the best place to enjoy the panoramic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri range.

In this itinerary we have planned 8 days for the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, starting from and ending in Kathmandu. If you have more time, how about enjoying the lakeside city Pokhara a bit? You can easily add few more days before or after the trek.

Best Season for Poon Hill Trekking: 
Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking can be done almost throughout the year. However, views are always different in every season or month you trek. In March/April, you will enjoy the blooming of the Rhododendron flower. In December/January you will see clear white snow in Poon Hill and Ghorepani. In October/November, you can enjoy the mountain view and weather will be neither hot nor cold. In the months of May/June, weather is rather chill, which is nice to escape the hot temperature of the cities. However, it might be a little cool to walk in shadow or rhododendron forest. Overall, this is why Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking is considered one of the most popular treka one can enjoy all seasons.

Cultural Aspects of Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:
Ghorepani Poon Hill trek offers mixed cultural experiences. This region is more dominated by the Gurung and Magar community. Also, lots of Gorkha Army family live around this area and sometimes you will see some of some of them on their holidays. It is also beautiful to see farmers and their farmland on the way and their houses, their cattle, and way of their day to day life. Walking through the forest of rhododendron adds extra excitement while walking. In such a short period of time, seeing all those things makes this trek a “lifetime experience”.  Ulleri, Ghorepani and Ghandruk are the main villages of this trek and all these villages has their own style of houses and livelihood.

In addition to that, you will see terraced slopes, warm villages, beautiful paddy fields, and wonderful culture and lifestyle of ethnic people like the Gurungs and Magars of the Annapurna Region. Here after if you continued further to Annapurna Base Camp, you will have less and less people or villages around. So, this short hiking gives a unique experience to observe Annapurna mountain ranges as well as foothills along with the charming settlements of ethnic communities of Nepal.
